Mentor Training at Foundations: Safe and Civil Schools PDF Print E-mail
by Tom Sebastian, Director of High School Coaching, Foundations Inc.

The training that was provided for our PAHSCI mentors by Tricia McKale of Safe and Civil Schools focused on proactive, positive, instructional behavior management practices.  It addressed the issue of coaching classroom management and prepared our mentors to support our instructional coaches in addressing this critical school-based need.  The text used for the training, Coaching Classroom Management, by Sprick, Knight, Reinke, and McKale, establishes the basis for a classroom management model designed for “addressing behavior before it necessitates correction, collecting data before embarking on interventions, implementing simple corrections before moving to progressively more intensive and time-intrusive ones, and setting a climate of respect for all.”  The session was well received and our mentors are eager to provide training to our coaches that will enhance their coaching effectiveness.

When asked for her response to the workshop, Erie Mentor Chris Kingsbery said, “The presentation was informative and provided opportunity to deepen our practice in promoting coaching for classroom management. Classroom management is a concern for many of our coaches. This information will inform our support for the coaches. We will use the strategies at our networking session to begin the coaches' training in this specific area to support their teachers. Further, we will plan mini-inservices throughout the year to embed the training and practices.”
